I'm sorry. I can't tell you much because my skin is brown...hahaha, not dark brown but white brown. The sun is my enemy. I'm trying to prevent a direct contact from the sun especially on my face. I'm very particular and picky when it comes to my skin. I carry umbrella or wearing a hat when I'm outside.

Tan is beautiful.

There is an ongoing campaign called "black is beautiful" to elevate the self-esteem of young African Americans. The campaign is working very well.

Perhaps there should be a similar campaign for Khmer children to take pride in their skin color, be they light-skinned or brown-skinned. When I was Cambodia I saw young women wearing long-sleeve shirts in sweltering heat and covering their face to keep from getting dark. I hear that many women undergo dangerous chemical peeling procedures to lighten their skin.

Dark complexions are often associated with farmers and hard manual labor, contributing to the cultural esteem of lighter skin. I think this is something that we Khmer people need to examine carefully rather than perpetuate as if by habit.

Good morning Oudam,

You're right, There are many people taking this action to the extreme. I forgot to mention that I don't like the sun on my face because I develop dark spot. I have to keep my face beautiful that is all I got...lolz. For me I think any skin color is beautiful and we should just be proud of who we are and especially tan which I'm off is very beautiful skin color that is my opinion and I'm proud to be in it.

Thank you Sam. No, I’m not tanning. When you’re at my age, it is difficult to keep up with the nice skin tone for tight and smooth looking. I try to exercise five times a week, use sauna and hot tub, eat a lot of fruits and vegetable, drink plenty of water eight glasses a day, take my vitamins and have plenty of rest. These are just to keep up with the look and for other healthy reasons. By taking care of myself like this, I want to live long enough to see my grandchildren..lolz. It’s hard to keep that beautiful and fresh radiant looks.

But I do put Sun screen SPF 15 to protect my skin when I go out in the sun and to prevent the skin cancer that could occur later in life. But if it is a skin cancer situation, I don’t think our brown skin people are easily leading to skin cancer as the white folks do. May be get a few burns this and that but never lead to cancer. So far I haven’t heard anyone talking about brown skin have skin cancer due to too much expose to the sun. There are probably some cases out there talking about skin cancer about brown or darker skin people, but majority of cases that I heard are from the white folks. They do have a lot of skin cancer because they want their skin to look like us. They are most vulnerable and easily get skin cancer because they don’t have thick skin pigment. For people who have darker skin, I think use lotions, moisturizer and Sun screen preventing it from getting burn, I think.

Hello Poun Bross,

Thank you for your suggestion on tanning. I don't focus too much on my skin color as long as they are healthy that is all matter to me. I'm not really worry about not having a man in my life or fall in love with someone. As long as I’m comfortable with who I am I don't need anything else. Sometimes happiness is not always coming from keeping up the good look but keep up the happiness thoughts and the changes from within is important in order to have a happy and contend life. At least that is what I'm striving for in my life. The most important is to feel comfortable about yourself no matter who you are. I guess you have to know yourself first before letting others knows you. I don't need a man to make my life complete or happy. I'm happy and contend just the way it is.

My view:

Skin color from birth is just beautiful as it looks, no matter how dark how brown. To be darken and browner through force of light and chemical artistries is just degraded sustainable components of moisture, texture, the feel-look clean. Tanning lotion and other chemical mixs is inviting physical change on skin cause skin cancer and destroy protected agents on skin.

I see young teenagers are doing better with tan. i doubt 40-60 years old women are taking too extreme be darken on top of their losing-skin. it's just don't make sense.

I explained to them. they totally understand but just don't stop. it's an addiction.

Oudam,

" Black is Beautiful" is the essence decentralize perception of self proclamed of being Born Black not being black at heart to not inviting hatred of Black society. Properly, we would address Black American as African American.

To be tanned to be darken i think is irrelevant to such a campaing.

correct me if i'm wrong.

Trust me Sam, if you see some of those white folks I worked with everyday, you would tell them the same thing like I told them. That is to go to tanning saloon first before coming out in shorts and tank-top like that. And they tell me to shut up everytime. Those winter white can be so ugly that's not even funny. it's on the verge of being hazardous...D: Not just white folks, some of my in-laws are koun-kut-chen, and after a long winter they're too in need of tanning real bad.

Unlike my complexion, it's perfect. It didn't get me anywhere in term of promotion, but it still a perfect complexion...D:

Chan,

Once i advised friends i've known for years not to tan but another friend told me that they're born for white folks not for me. needless to say i swallowed what i've got...just smile and walked off. i's really embarrassed.

i learned the hard way. it's easier to let thing go.
