My Discussions
Hi everyone!
Have you been a victim of prejudice or discrimination? What did you do about it? Have you experienced prejudice against others? What might you do about it?
Please enlighten?
These issues were brought to my attention sometime ago. This KC site is a beautiful place to meet new people from around the world, a place to make new friends or a place where we can share our ideas and thoughts; and not to mention we can share our music’s and more. Therefore, comes on, play nice together and respects one another. There is no need to be rude or dislike the other pages that we have no control over. What I’m trying to say is that we are all human being, we are all breathing in the same air and WHY do we have to prejudice and/or discriminate towards our own kinds. Who’s care, where have they come from? We have all comes together into this one site’s from around the world, for one purpose only is to meet new people, not to criticize others.
Some people have condemned billions of other people without ever meeting them, without ever learning their names. The reason is Prejudice and Discrimination.
Prejudice is a preconceived attitude towards a group or person. Prejudice is the belief that a person or group, on the basis of assumed racial, ethnic, sexual, or other features, will possess negative characteristics or perform inadequately. Emotionally speaking, prejudice is associated with negative feelings such as dislike or hatred. Behaviourally, prejudice is expressed through avoidance of the targeted group (keeping a distance), by direct aggression toward them, or by discriminating against them.
Discrimination is the denial of privileges to a person or group on the basis of prejudice. Discrimination takes such forms as denial of access: to club memberships, to jobs, to housing, to the voting booth and even to a seat in restaurants. Many groups in the United States have experienced discrimination—women, gay males, lesbians, older people, and ethnic groups such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino and Latina Americans, Irish Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans.
However, as we shall see, we are all people, even though we do not speak the same language and/or our young generation doesn’t understand Khmer words; that does not give us the right to judge others. Would you all agree with me? As I have mentioned, we are all here to make friends not make enemies.

My viable ideas/opinions:
The way leading to true and lasting happiness
To give light, hope, self-esteem, metal immunity and happiness.
Prejudice exists all over the world in human species which is hard to eliminate completely. It can only be minimized through education.
Looking for fault in oneself, not others. Never gossip about people maliciously. Hatred does not cease by hatred, but by love alone. This is the eternal rule. Keep hatred in the mind suffering will follow you.
The up and down of life
Life is full of happiness and sadness. Life’s up and down. It doesn't matter what problems we encounter, be strong inside, never let negative emotions such as anger, sadness, jealousy, etc. in our mind because the negative emotions have harmful effect on our body, but let positive emotions in. If we look at kids, we see that they fight a lot with each other and then they become friends again. Kids have resilient mind and we should learn from them. If you cannot fix wrong doers, fix your mind first. To solve problems, our mind must be calm like the calm sea. We are kind-hearted and generous people and we tend to forget and forgive wrong doers. We are the good model. We behave ourselves well and hope they will soon copy from us. Some people are literate while some are illiterate. Some people know how to behave while some don't. I don't feel angry with people who don't behave because they have never learnt discipline; so they never learned how to behave.
You, yourself as much as anybody in the universe, deserve your love and affection.
Everybody needs love. Keep love in the mind to live as noble man, happiness will follow you.
Looking for happiness
Happiness comes from within you. It depends on your temperament and how you behave toward each other. Some people feel more contented while some feel less contented. Some people are the top bricks of the chimney and still they never feel contented. In fact, whether you are rich or poor you are just part of the whole. Suppose builders are asked to build a property. The materials used must be bricks, sand and cement, etc. The builders know that some bricks are used to lay the floor, some bricks are used to build wall while the rest of the bricks are used to build a chimney, etc. We are like bricks. We see that every brick is equally important. It doesn’t matter we are rich or poor. It doesn’t mean that the top bricks of the chimney are more important than the bricks that are used to lay floor and to make up walls. All bricks are equal important. Rich and poor all have their problems. The rich have their problems. The poor also have theirs. The rich have their happiness. The poor also have theirs. Therefore we are all deserved to be treated fairly and to have equal opportunity.
Rich and poor are alike, each has their suffering. Just accept what you’ve got. Satisfaction and freedom are your greatest joy.
The recurring cycle
Everything has good and bad. Bad things, discrimination and sadness exist, just accept it. The bad are problems which give rise to questions which make us think. Once we get correct answers, we feel happy. Then it poses another problem on and on. And we will solve it again. Suppose we live in a perfect world, then our brain will not be working anymore. Light and darkness are inseparable and that shadows are also light. Be happy and enjoy life in paradise on earth. That is the way of life.
Enjoy life no matter how hard it may seem. When life gives you one hundred reasons to cry, show the world that you have one thousand reasons to smile!
Transform suffering into power.
The benefits of living together in harmony
Some people get along with each other well while some don’t due to:
1) Lack of education, moral education, and wisdom,
2) Different cultures,
3) Mental problems, health problems,
4) Individual's different personalities,
5) Economic conditions, etc.
For one thing that makes people happy in KC site is that we can share music videos, opinions, happiness and sadness, etc. which can improve our knowledge and skills which worth more than gold and diamonds. For another most important thing in our life is our duty to look after our family, young and old that is our children and parents and grandparent, etc. and thus leading to an everlasting state of great joy and peace. To repay our parents for raising us by looking after them when they are old is the best thing we must do in our life. The period of a family living together is very short but very joyful, so we should appreciate it. If we do good things, in future good things will happen to us. To keep love in the mind to live as a noble man, happiness will follow you.
Happiness is never decreased by being shared. The more you share the more you gain.
Happiness and sadness
For human beings when they gain something, they feel happy but when they lose something they feel sad. Looking from one angle we see that life is wonderful, meeting a lot of people, good and bad, also being accompanied by beautiful nature: the sun, the moon, the sky, and the stars, etc. What a beautiful world! These are the things that are granted to us and being taken for granted. Looking from the other angle we see that we want to keep and maintain everything we own permanently, but we cannot because everything that belongs to nature will eventually return to nature.
Everythying is impermanent. Everything comes ang goes. Everything is transcient. This is the law of nature, just accept it as we cannot change it. All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. These are predestined.
Health first
The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment. Your health is your wealth. As long as you are healthy you are wealthy. Your health is a lot more important than your assets. Some people are rich but they are not healthy for both the mind and the body. Wealth is important but not as important as your health. This means that it doesn’t matter what job you do, think about safety. Safety is the first, not money.
To prevent is better than to cure. Always observe, analyse and test your idea and equipments first before using it.
Attachments and Detachments
People usually have emotional bond with their assets, friends and relatives, etc. when people lose something, they feel sad. In fact it depends on how strong they have emotional bond with their relatives, assets, etc. If people have strong bond with their things, they feel very painful when they lose them. When going out, you must have a purpose and let your parents, guardians, or relatives know where you go or they will worry about you. Don’t go wandering or doing nothing, when you are living with your guardian or parents. This applies particularly to those under 21 years old.
Good and bad about competition in human species
All living things compete with one another until they are at rest. For human being, they compete for food, shelter and mating, etc. Competition has good and/or bad effects on each other. Competition can lead to suffering but also can lead to the improvement of intelligence. For example, some people earn a lot of money, that is to say they compete successfully, but when they spend money on wrong products such as additive, illegal drugs and prostitution which cause suffering and they may die as a consequence of wrong use of money. The loser and the poor don’t have money to spend on those things and they are safe and healthy both physically and bodily. Some losers may suffer from a desire for more money. This make the losers figure out until they understand how can compete better, how to earn money more for a living. Some losers are homeless and hungry as a result of lacking of ability and skills to earn money. Some people have more opportunities for education while some have less. We feel pity for those people who have less opportunities and therefore we would like to correct it by putting them back to school and giving them more education and more cash.
Be humble and be brave. Transform suffering into power.
Positive mental attitude
The mind is everything, what you think you become. Be positive and think positively. If you want the truth, you will get the truth. I have been looking for happiness and the truth about the way of life for a long time. Now I have found happiness and the truth. The above ideas are the true happiness and the truth about the way of life. If you want to eat fish, you have to learn how to fish. Knowledge is power. It can be exchanged for money. Robbers can rob you of your money but not of your knowledge. A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.
The power of the mind
Rich or poor does not depend on what you have got, but depends on what you feel. It doesn't matter how much money you have got. If you feel that you are poor, you are poor. Some people are rich but they feel they are poor while some are poor but they feel they are rich. For example, monks are poor but they feel they are rich, so they are rich; they are rich in the mind. Monks are poor but happy because they feel more satisfied with what they have got, so we should learn from them. we are richer than monks but unhappy because we feel less satisfied with what we have got. This is very unhealthy for the mind.
Believe nothing no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. Rich and poor are alike, each has their suffering. Just accept what you’ve got. Satisfaction and freedom are your greatest joy.
Human reactions
We would rather smile than frown when we solve problems because when we smile to people, they smile back, we expect them to smile back, if they do, we expect to solve our problems successfully by peaceful mean. Most people react like an image in a mirror. Any problems should be solveed successfully by using a win-win solution, that is to give benefits to yourself as well as other people.
What you want a man to do to you, you do likewise to him.
A warrior from within
I have a resilient mind, and I am invincible. When people minimize my self-esteem, I will maximize it. When people underrate me, I will overrate myself. When people say, “You are nothing”. I will say, “I am nothing being nothing I am everything”. When life gives me one hundred reasons to cry, I will show the world that I have one thousand reasons to smile. When I am attacked physically, I will run. To run is the best way of self-defence. A good day makes me happy while a bad day gives me a lesson and tests my intelligence. Every person is different. Every person has strength and weakness. I use my strength for my own advantages and mend my weakness. I am the fittest, and I determine to embrace other cultures and am not afraid of change.
To bring peace to all one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. Righteousness will triumph over evil.
Survival of the fittest

What does it mean to be Khmer?
It means being part of a nation that is once creative, honourable, brave and yet able to laugh at itself, a nation which pulls together in adversity, a nation with centuries of tradition which it is determined to continue and to defend, but which embraces other cultures and is not afraid of change, a nation which can proudly claim to be a contender.
Expect nothing and you will never feel disappointed. The Buddha said,"No one can escape unhappiness. If people expect only happiness in life, they will be disappointed".
Buddhism

The story of Buddha began like this. When Buddha went out to the outside world, he saw sufferings. The natures of suffereing are Birth, Illness, Old age and Death, etc. He had compassion toward all living beings. He wondered what caused suffering. He wanted the truths. Finally, he discovered many answers:
Mental training and fixing
– Looking for fault in oneself, not others.
– Never gossip about people maliciously.
– Be humble and be brave.
– Righteousness will triumph over evil.
– Be yourself. Every person is different. Everybody have strength and weakness.
– Learn to be patient.
– It doesn’t matter where you live, rich and poor are alike, and each has their suffering. Just accept what you’ve got. Satisfaction and freedom are your greatest joy.
– To prevent is better than to cure. Always observe, analyse and test your idea and equipments first before using it.
– We are what we think. All that we are arise with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.
– The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment.
– Happiness never decreases by being shared. The more you share the more you gain.
– All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions.
– You, yourself as much as anybody in the universe, deserve your love and affection
– Everybody needs love.
– As mother at risk of her life watches over her child, so let everyone cultivate a boundlessly compassionate mind towards all living beings.
– Keep love in the mind to live as noble man, happiness will follow you.
– Hatred does not cease by hatred, but by love alone. This is the eternal rule.
– Keep hatred in the mind suffering will follow you.
– Believe nothing no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
– Better than a thousand hollow worlds is one world that brings peace.
– To bring peace to all one must first discipline and control one’s own mind.
– Expect nothing and you will never feel disappointed. The Buddha said,"No one can escape unhappiness. If people expect only happiness in life, they will be disappointed".
– Buddha said,"When people overrarte you, don't be so overjoy as this reaction may impair your judgement. On the other hand, when people underrate, criticize you, don't feel angry as this reaction harms you".
The Four Noble Truths
1. Unscrupulous, selfish greed causes suffering. Some people love money more than themselves and commit a crime and as a result they get caught. Suffering will be ended by ending greed.
2. Craving for wrong things causes suffering. For example, craving for addictive, illegal drugs and prostitution, etc. Buddha said, “The extinction of wrong kind of desire is an everlasting state of great joy and peace”.
3. Ignorance of the law of Karma is also causes suffering. Karma is a belief that we receive exactly what we earn, whether it is good or bad. If we do good things, in future good things will happen to us.
Buddha means the enlightened one, so anyone can be Buddha as long as you lead people in good courses. In Buddhism people are allowed to have freedom of speech, freedom of choice of religion and of what you want to believe. Buddha showed the way. After all, you are the one who make the decision. The aim of Buddhism is to bring happiness into the world and thus relieve sufferings. When people said, “Do the right things”, they refer to the followings:
The Noble Eightfold Path is the path to the end of suffering.
1. Right view. How much you understand about the way of life.
2. Right thought. We are what we think. Kind thoughts build good characters.
3. Right speech. By speaking helpful worlds, we are respected and trusted by everybody.
4. Right conduct. Good behaviour. People know you through your behaviour.
5. Right livelihood. Choosing a job that gives benefits to yourself and other people and that does not harm yousefl and other people.
6. Right effort. Doing our best and have good will toward others.
7. Right Mindfulness. Being aware of our thoughts, words and deeds.
8. Right Concentration. Through right concentration you will achieve your goal.
Looking for the Universal truths
1. All living beings changes through stages, from one stage to another, from young to old age, and finally, they die. All changes are impermanent. Everything comes and goes. Everything that comes from the sources will eventually return to the sources. Everything is transient. This is the law of nature, just accept it as we cannot change it.
Monks usually say: You come in this world with nothing and you return with nothing, that is
you bring nothing with you when you die. You were born with nothing and you will die with nothing.
A wise man said," when you live you need a roof over your head, when you die, you take along nothing with you".
2. You shall reap what you sowed.
Through the observations of things in nature in the process of transformation leading to discover the truth and the law of nature.
Hopefully, after learning basic Buddhism people will become spiritually enlightened person, understand the way of life and start to behave better to make better environment to live in. People create environment. Let's create perfect environment and a perfect world for everybody to live in. Turn hell into paradise.
May this world be filled with Love, Compassion and Harmony!
Through the merit of this practice may I quickly attain the state of enlightenment and may I lead all living beings without exception to the state of enlightenment.
Thankfulness
Thank you so much Sovanmonika for putting forwards your questions. By answering your questions now I have discovered the true and lasting happiness and the truth about the way of life. I also would like to say thanks to the lord Buddha for his kindness, generosity and showing the enlightened way leading to righteousness, honour, happiness and healthy living. Please accept my gratitude. As I now have become a spiritually enlightened person, I will lead all living beings without exception to the state of enlightenment.
Thanks for reading. Love you all. Take care.

Equal opportunity is a term which has differing definitions and there is no consensus as to the precise meaning.[1] Some use it as a descriptive term for an approach intended to provide a certain social environment in which people are not excluded from the activities of society, such as education, employment, or health care, on the basis of immutable traits. Equal opportunity practices include measures taken by organizations to ensure fairness in the employment process. A basic definition of equality is the idea of equal treatment and respect.
Equal Opportunities
Treating everyone the same. Equal treatment for all: the availability of the same rights, position, and status to all people, regardless of gender, sexual preference, age, race, ethnicity, or religion.
What does the term Equality mean?
Equality means the same and thus we have to treat people equally and fairly.
How does an organisation ensure that they are not discriminating against their staff or customers?
An orgainsation ensures that they are not discriminating by having a policy in place.
Why is it good for organisations to have Diverse staff?
Having diverse staff to ensure that there is no discrimination.
What are the different strands of Diversity?
Strands are genetic materials that make up living things. In human beings the different strands of diversity determine different individuals which can be grouped into different races according to their skin colour and hair colour, etc.
What is Diversity?
Diversity means variety. In this world we have seen variety of people, etc, so we have to respect and treat them uniquely as individual to avoid stereotype.
Diversity strands
London is at the heart of the UK’s most diverse population, however in order for businesses to benefit from this diversity, a more proactive approach is required that takes into account attracting the right employees, understanding customer and employee needs and managing business reputation.
Diversity means difference and in a workplace these differences, both visible and non-visible need to be valued. An individual’s identity can be varied, nevertheless should be respected and as reasonably and practical as possible, accommodated within a non-discriminatory work environment.
There are six important areas for all organisations to consider which are covered by UK legislation which are age, disability, ethnicity, gender, religion or belief and sexual orientation.
We are committed to working for a society where diversity is valued and everyone has an equal chance to live free from fear, discrimination and prejudice. We believe promoting diversity is not only a moral responsibility but also a practical necessity.
We strive to create an environment that promotes equality of opportunity, eliminates unlawful discrimination and builds good relations between people of different backgrounds.
What is diversity?
People are not the same. Everyone is different. Diversity therefore consists of different factors, which can include personal characteristics such as age, disability, faith, gender, race and sexual orientation. We all help to make up the diversity within our communities and our workforce, not just those of us from under represented groups. Diversity considerations apply to us all.
Embracing diversity is crucial to policing and this must be done to:
• understand the needs of service users so that our services are accessible, appropriate, fair, proportionate and inclusive;
• eliminate barriers, discrimination and other unfair practices;
• maximise opportunities to learn from feedback and continually improve our working methods;
• become an employer of choice, enabling us to recruit talented people from the widest possible pool;
• increase the diversity of our workforce so that we can achieve the optimum skills mix to deliver policing services of excellence;
• tap into the skills, insight and potential of all sectors of our workforce.
The Force also carries out training for all staff in addition to positive action initiatives.
There are six strands of diversity…please click on the buttons in the menu bar to the left or use the links below for more information.
Age
From 1st October 2006 the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations make it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age. The regulations cover recruitment, terms and conditions, promotions, transfers, dismissals and training.
Briefly, it is now illegal on the grounds of age to:
• discriminate directly against anyone, that is to treat them less favourably than others, because of their age – unless you can justify it objectively
• discriminate indirectly against anyone – that is to apply a criterion, provision or practice which disadvantages people of a particular age unless you can justify it objectively
• subject someone to harassment. Harassment is unwanted behaviour that violates someone’s dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them, when considering all the circumstances, including the victim’s own perception
• victimise someone because they have made a complaint or allegation or have given, or intend to give, evidence relating to an age discrimination complaint
discriminate against someone in certain circumstances, after the working relationship has ended
Faith
The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 make it unlawful to discriminate against someone or harass someone on grounds of religion or belief in employment and vocational training. They cover all aspects of the employment relationship including:
• recruitment
• pay
• working conditions
• training
• promotion
• dismissals
• references
Religion or belief is defined as being any religious belief or similar philosophical belief. This does not include any philosophical or political belief unless it is similar to religious belief.
The legislation also covers perception of religion or belief. So it protects people who are assumed – correctly or incorrectly – to be of a particular religion or belief. It also protects people who are discriminated against because of the religion or belief of the people with whom they associate, for example their family and friends.
Gender
The Sex Discrimination Act 1975, section 6 prohibits direct or indirect sex discrimination (and direct or indirect discrimination relating to a person's status as a married person or civil partner) and victimisation:
• in the arrangements made for the purposes of determining who should be offered employment
• in the terms on which employment is offered
• by refusing or deliberately omitting to offer employment
• in the way an employee is afforded access to opportunities for promotion, transfer or training or to any other benefits, facilities or services
• by refusing or deliberately omitting to afford an employee access to those opportunities, benefits, facilities or services
• by dismissing an employee (which includes constructive dismissal); and
• by subjecting an employee to any other detriment
Section 6 also prohibits harassment against employees or applicants for employment.
Gender reassignment
The Act gives protection, in relation to employment and vocational training, against less favourable treatment on the grounds that the employee intends to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone gender reassignment.
'Gender reassignment' is defined as 'a process which is undertaken under medical supervision for the purpose of reassigning a person's sex by changing physiological or other characteristics of sex, and includes any part of such a process'.
Race
Positive relations between the police and ethnic minority communities are critical if the police are to build safer communities.
The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry report, published in 1999, highlighted the fact that minority ethnic communities lacked trust and confidence in the police force. Recommendations were made as a result of the inquiry which were given statutory force by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 which placed a general duty on public authorities and bodies to:
• eliminate racial discrimination
• promote equality of opportunity
• promote good relations between people from different racial groups
The Race Relations Act prohibits direct and indirect race discrimination:
• in the arrangements made for the purpose of determining who should be offered employment
• in the terms on which employment is offered
• by refusing or deliberately omitting to offer employment
• in the terms of employment afforded to an individual
• in the way the employer affords the employee access to opportunities for promotion, transfer or training, or to any other benefits, facilities or services
• by dismissing the employee or subjecting him or her to any other detriment
Sexual Orientation
The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientations) Regulations 2003 make it unlawful to discriminate against someone or harass someone on grounds of sexual orientation in employment and vocational training. They cover all aspects of the employment relationship including:
• recruitment
• pay
• working conditions
• training
• promotion
• dismissals
• references
Sexual orientation is defined as orientation towards persons of the:
• same sex (gay men and women)
• opposite sex (heterosexual)
• same sex and the opposite sex (bisexual)
The legislation also covers perception of sexual orientation. So it protects people who are assumed – correctly or incorrectly – to be of a particular sexual orientation. It also protects people who are discriminated against because of the sexual orientation of the people with whom they associate, for example their family and friends.
Training
All new officers and staff are required to attend our two-day diversity training course. This covers the six strands of diversity. A number of group discussions, written documents and visual instruments are used to deliver the training effectively.
In addition, we have a Police Race and Diversity Learning Development Programme (PRDLDP) which is a national strategy designed to improve the race and diversity performance of all forces. All officers and staff at Lincolnshire Police will be assessed on this standard.
We have introduced PRDLDP to assist us in making evidential improvements in the following areas:
• Increased and improved interaction with diverse communities. This will support the development of a citizen-focused, community based police service.
• Increased trust and confidence in the police, leading to better intelligence and information received from the public.
• Improved recruitment and retention of both officers and staff from under-represented groups
• A change in the organisational culture practices to eliminate discrimination and establish an ethos of fair treatment for all
• An achieved level of competence, which can be readily assessed through the PDR and promotions process.
Positive Action
Positive action allows us to encourage those from under-represented groups to apply to the Force. Therefore, the Force is committed to encouraging women, ethnic minority, disabled and those from gay and lesbian communities to apply.
Positive action makes it easier for people from under-represented groups to take advantages if opportunities to work. Positive action is not positive discrimination. Positive action is about encouragement to apply, mentoring and support networks.
It is not a ‘fast track’ system or a way of treating applications differently. Recruitment is open to all and each application is treated strictly on merit.
We have carried out a range of positive action initiatives including:
• Recruitment seminars targeting under-represented groups.
• Positive action flyers targeted to minority communities promoting Lincolnshire Police as an employer.
• Expressions of interest for certain posts from under-represented groups.
Disability
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) protects disabled people from discrimination and victimisation in certain defined circumstances. It gives rights to disabled people who have or have had a disability which makes it difficult do normal activities.
Disabled employees and potential employees are protected from discrimination by an employer in relation to:
• the recruitment and selection process
• terms of employment
• promotion, transfer, training or any other benefit
• dismissal or being subjected to any other detriment
Under the act someone is considered disabled if they have a ‘physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long term adverse effect on his ability to carry out normal day to day activates. Amendments to this act which came into force in December 2005 mean that people with HIV, multiple sclerosis or cancer are deemed to be disabled.
Reasonable adjustments
The duty to make reasonable adjustments is the unique feature of the DDA. An employer needs to consider reasonable adjustments to premises, practices or procedures, if these would otherwise put a disabled person at a substantial disadvantage.
The Act sets out examples of the kinds of steps that an employer may have to take in relation to a disabled worker. Though it is not an exhaustive list it includes:
• making adjustments to premises
• allocating some of the disabled person's duties to another person
• transferring him or her to fill an existing vacancy
• altering his or her hours of working or training
• assigning him or her to a different place of work or training
• allowing him or her to be absent during working or training hours for rehabilitation, assessment or treatment
• giving or arranging for training or mentoring (whether for the disabled person or any other person)
• acquiring or modifying equipment
• modifying instructions or reference manuals
• modifying procedures for testing or assessment
• providing a reader or interpreter
• providing supervision or other support
The DDA is based on the concept of ‘reasonableness’ and recognises the need to maintain a balance between the rights of disabled people and the interests of employers. In deciding what are reasonable, factors such as the cost of the adjustment, the employer’s resources, the amount of time needed and the effect of the adjustment would all be taken into account

JOB
Some of the popular answers to Interviewers Questions
1. Interview Questions
Generally speaking there are going to be certain questions that arise at your interview that you can pretty much expect to get asked at any interview you may attend. The great thing about this is the fact that you can rehearse your answers to these questions and with enough practice they will flow off your tongue easier than honey sipping down your throat! These questions are likely to be fired at all candidates applying for the job. So, although they may sound personal to you and they are to a degree; these are pretty standard interview questions. So here goes. You have to bear in mind that these are the responses that I would consider giving. They are obviously not set in stone and you will need to adapt answers according to your situation:
2. Tell Me about Yourself
Sounds a bit like the sort of question you get asked on a date! This isn't as straight forward to answer as at first it might seem. Don't start rambling on about how much you love watching the Simpsons on the TV. That isn't what the interviewer is looking to hear. You will probably need to answer this question with a question. Perhaps you could try saying ; What would you like to know about me?" This then gives your interviewer the chance to get you to tell them exactly what information they are looking for. If possible try and keep this part of the interview to a minimum. If you can, see if you can build into your response positives which relate to the job you are applying for. For example; if it's a sales role you could say "I am a well organised person who enjoys finding a new prospect, working with it and closing the deal, carrying out the completion from start to finish". Sometimes your interviewer might ask about your hobbies and again you should pick out points that relate to the job you are applying for whether remote or not.
3. What Is the Most Enjoyable Part Of Your Current Job?
This is a fairly straight forward question but has a bit of a double meaning. Obviously there are going to be parts of your existing job that you don't like doing or you wouldn't be applying for this new position would you? But your job can't be that great either or you wouldn't be applying for this job! Don't get led down this route.
Just answer something along the lines of “I do enjoy my present job so I can't really put my finger on any part of it that I dislike. I am just looking to further my career" and leave it at that. It is possible to use this question to your benefit but you need to make sure you pick something that is going to compliment the job you are applying for.
4. Tell us about the Biggest Challenge You've ever Faced In Your Career?
Oh wow, this is a really great question to help you shine! You are more than likely to be asked this question and it is a really great opportunity for you to blow your own trumpet. Pick a challenge where you have been successful and explain how you overcame it and what the outcome was. This question can also be used by the interviewer to gauge what you consider to be a challenge, so this is a bit of a crafty one as well.
5. Why Do You Want To Leave Your Present Job?
This is a bit of a stupid question really as the chances of the interviewer getting a straight answer are fairly limited. Let's face it; if the job you are in doesn't pay very well and you want more money, you are going to be looking for a new job. It might be that your current boss is a complete idiot and you don't like him. It could be you can' stand working with John in accounts. You aren't going to say any of these things are you? Well hopefully not! I think a standard response along the lines of "I feel that I have outgrown the company I am in and my contribution as part of a team could be put to better use with a larger or more focused company where I can expand my skill further. I am really interested in... ... ..but my existing employer doesn't have the resources to let me advance in this area" and leave it at that. Just try not to be negative about the job you are leaving. It doesn't look good.
6. What Is Your Present Boss Like?
Another question posed by interviewers to gauge your loyalty and integrity. It is not good idea to be critical about any of the employers you have ever worked for. Realistically very few of us actually like our bosses. Well, most of us just placate them and tell them what they want to hear. After all why would you possibly want to be best buddies with a person who holds your career prospects in their hands? If you get asked this question the most appropriate reply is "I like my boss and get on very well with him (or her). I respect their experience and they are good at their job". You really don't need to expand any further on this issue at interview stage. You have to remember that the person interviewing you may well; at some point in the near future become your boss and they are weighing up your loyalty and integrity.
7. What Do You Think This Job Entails?
Now, when you are applying for a new job the chances are you are going to know something about what it is all about. For example; if the job is a secretarial role and you are a secretary, you will know what sort of work you are going to be involved with. In any case you will have been given a brief description of the job role and what responsibilities it carries in either the advertisement about it or in a job description that may have been sent with the original application form, so you should be able to make a reasoned reply.
8. What do you know about this organisation?
Now if you have taken my earlier advice you will have done your research and read up about what the company is involved in, its products, its turnover and its strategy.
You will really impress your interviewer if you are able to show that you have this knowledge. As previously mentioned people like to think that if you are really eager to work for them. You will have done some research about what they do and how they do it. So let's say you are applying for a job with a major high street retailer you could say something like "1 notice that you are one of the leading stores who operate a "Fair Trade Policy" when purchasing your goods from third world countries. I have to say that I am very supportive of this and it would be nice to work for an employer who cares about the impact their business has on people in the outside world".
9. What Made You Apply For This Job And Why Do You Want It?
This is a bit of a double edged question. Your interviewer isn't necessarily looking for an answer here that is straight forward. You know you are applying for the job because you think you would enjoy doing it, the package is right and you think you would be able to advance your career with this firm, but the interviewer wants to see if there are some specifics that really attract you to it (other than the £ 50,000 per year and company car). So dependent upon what the role is, you could use an answer such as "1 am a very well organised person and this role involves exceptional management skills. I thrive under pressure and it makes me perform to my full ability which makes me think that 1 would really enjoy it". Obviously you can tailor this answer to whatever role you are applying for.
10. What Qualities Do You Think You Can Bring To This Job Position?
Again, you know that you can do this job and that is why you have applied for it. Not only do you know that you can do the job, you will do it better than anyone else, so you will be aware of the qualities you are going to bring to this business. You will have reviewed the job spec and the key responsibilities so you will be able to select several areas where you feel your qualities will stand out. Perhaps you could therefore give an answer along the lines of "1 have experience working in the complaints department where a sympathetic touch is required dealing with disgruntled customers.I am very tactful and am able to defuse situations using my personal skills".
11. How Long Would You Expect To Work For Our Organisation?
Let's face it no employer wants to go through the hassle and cost of hiring a new candidate if the candidate only stays with them for 6 months and then decides to apply to another firm. The recruitment process is a long and expensive one especially where agencies are used to introduce the candidate. This could cost your potential employer as much as 30% of your first year's package! It's probably a good idea therefore to intimate that you would like to work for this firm for several years minimum and you could provide an answer along the lines of "I like the way your company is continuing to expand and I would like to be part of that on a long term basis. So I would like to think that I could continue to work for you for a lengthy period of time providing my career continues to progress".
12. What's Your Greatest Strength?
Only you can answer this question, but it is a question that will more than likely be asked. After all, the interviewer wants to know what you are good at. This question gives you pretty much an open mandate to really show off. However don't overdue the self praise. When answering this question try and provide strengths that relate to the role that you are applying for, so if the job requires the need to be organised and a good team leader provide these as strengths within your answer.
13. What Is Your Biggest Weakness?
Bit of a tricky question this, after all no one wants to show their weaknesses but we all have them. The most comprehensive way of dealing with this question is to try and turn it into a "positive" from a "negative". So you could perhaps say "my biggest weakness is buying the kids sweets when they ask for them in the shop" or "I really dislike washing the car at the weekend but once I have done it I always feel a real sense of satisfaction".
14. Where Do You See Yourself In Five Years Time?
Don't say as I have heard so many times "sitting in your job!" Although I have a sense of humour, most interviewers do not. The remark often has an element of truth hanging in the background and you don't want your interviewer thinking you are potentially a threat to his or her job in the future. I am sure you will have ideas about where you want to be in a few years time. Most people, whether they put them down on paper or not, have a good idea of their long term career objectives. Try and answer the question positively but not too arrogantly. Perhaps you could give an answer such as "I have always been very career minded and ambitious. I would like to keep progressing up the career ladder and feel that your organisation will be able to offer me that opportunity".
15. What Would Your Work Colleagues Say About You?
This question provides another opportunity for you to demonstrate that you are easy to get on with, a team player and a generally amenable person who works well with other people. You could answer this question with a quote such as "I am an organised, approachable, dependable, easy to get on with team member who is always willing to offer my advice or assistance to colleagues where needed". Don't go overboard with your answer, making out you are something you are not. You may get away with stretching the truth, but if you are not a "natural team leader" don't say you are!
16. What Would Your Friends Say About You?
Obviously this question is similar to the one above. If you are a popular, kind, caring person who can be counted on and would help a friend out at the drop of a hat then let your interviewer know.
17. What Interests Do You Have Outside Of Your Work?
This will be a definite question (in my opinion) and is posed by your interviewer to try and ascertain what you are like outside of your working environment. If you don't like football or snooker don't say that you do. Just provide honest answers. There is nothing worse than saying you follow a sport and then it turning out that the interviewer is mad about the subject and starts asking you question you can't answer.
You will look a fool and your honesty will be under scrutiny!
18. What Type Of Books Or Publications Do You Like?
This question needs an honest answer. Just because you think the interviewer is looking to hear you tell them that you have just finished "Marketing Skills Made Easy" and that it was the best read of your life, it isn't a good idea to make it up. If you have genuinely read David Jason's autobiography or Stephen King's latest book then tell the employer what you enjoyed about it. Of course if you work within certain industries; read the trade publications and have recently read an interesting article about the latest "blue widget release" then by all means use this as an example.
